Major Initiatives

Science College

The school having gained Specialist Science College status, beginning in September 2004, the Science and Mathematics faculties are at the centre of considerable developments over the next few years. Staffing and resource plans are complete; refurbishment and/or new build are being discussed. Partnerships between the school and local business, the Peninsula Medical School and the other science colleges in Cornwall (Bodmin and Camborne) are being developed. This is an exciting area of our work and we aim to enhance Penair as a centre of excellence for science teaching through these activities.

Leading Edge

With our partner schools Roseland and Richard Lander, we are arranging a number of opportunities for staff and students. Very recently 120 primary children spent a Saturday morning at Penair being treated to a variety of activities linked to language learning.

Further work is being organised related to e-learning, dyslexia and additional courses for 14-19 year old students. With Pencalenick School, we have offered courses on autism at several levels. These are accredited by Birmingham University. Some of them will be for anyone who is interested, particularly parents.

Training School

Penair is designated as a Training School.

As centres of excellence for training, Training Schools act as experts in adult learning and the transfer of skills, and provide a venue for high quality professional development. It is expected that they will contribute to supporting the whole school workforce through providing a balance of training programmes that are personalised, relevant and contribute to teaching and learning. When working with colleagues that are joining the profession, Training Schools must expect their school-based support to model good practice and complement any professional standards. Other features of the role will be to extend the spread and reach of the school's work as an advocate and adviser for education and training, both locally and nationally.

14-19 Curriculum

Penair School is working collaboratively with The Roseland Community School, Richard Lander School and Truro College to plan and deliver the new curriculum, including the new diplomas. The consortium passed through Gateway 1 and will offer the Creative and Media Diploma and the Society, Health and Development Diploma in September 2009. Subject to approval, six other diplomas will be available in 2010.

Penair also works in collaboration with Cornwall Education Business Partnership to offer KS4 gifted and talented students a course entitled Media and Enterprise Internship, and with Cornwall College, St Austell to offer a Young Apprenticeship in Costruction.
